Taiwanese wins World’s Best Inventor Title


Inventor Gordon Teng (鄧鴻吉) was named one of the world’s most outstanding inventors at an international invention show in Osijek, Croatia, on Saturday.


Teng, who has been dubbed “Taiwan’s Thomas Edison,” was granted the title and a golden trophy by the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations.


Also receiving the honor were two other inventors — one from the US and the other from Romania — with the winners selected from a pool of candidates from 22 countries.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Citizens enjoyed a night of celebrations yesterday with musical performances and the iconic Taipei 101 fireworks display kicking off the new year.

Nobel prize winner Satyarthi praises young Taiwanese


Indian children’s rights activist Kailash Satyarthi, one of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winners, on Friday said he loves Taiwan and its people, citing the hundreds of young Taiwanese who volunteer to help him in his fight for children’s rights.

The nation opened a series of National Day celebrations with a military honor guard and marching band in Taipei on October 10, the 103rd birthday of the Republic of China (ROC). About 400 members of the Ministry of National Defense Honor Guard and the Joint Military Marching Band performed in the plaza in front of the Presidential Office Building to great applause by the audience.

Taiwan’s Hsu Shu-ching claims the first gold in 17th Asian Games


Taiwan’s Hsu Shu-ching won gold and set a new combined world mark of 233kg in the 53kg category at the Asian Games yesterday, while Kazakhistan weightlifter Zulfiya Chinshanlo broke her own clean-and-jerk world record.

Taiwanese film ‘Ice Poison’ chosen to vie for Oscar award


Taiwanese-Burmese director Midi Z’s (趙德胤) film Ice Poison (冰毒) will represent the nation to vie for the Oscar for best foreign-language film at next year’s Academy Awards, the Ministry of Culture said on Tuesday.


The film, shot in Myanmar, charts economic despair in the rural and developing parts of the Southeast Asian country.

Perng, governor of Taiwan's central bank ranked once again as top-tier central banker


TAIPEI--Perng Fai-nan (彭淮南), governor of Taiwan's central bank (中央銀行), was named one of the world's seven best central bankers in 2014 by Global Finance magazine late last week.


Perng was awarded an A for the 10th straight year from 2005-2014 in the magazine's Central Bank Report Cards, which grades central bankers on an “A” to “F” scale.

Guishan Island lies in coastal waters 12 kilometers northeast of Yilan, Taiwan.  The island is 2.8 square kilometers in area, and from certain angles it resembles a sea turtle floating on the ocean, with its head facing eastward into the Pacific and its tail ponting toward Taiwan.

Taiwanese chef won trophy in Global Pastry Chef Challenge


Pastry chef for 85℃ (85度C) Bakery Cafe Chen Li-che won glory for Taiwan internationally after he bagged the championship at this year’s Global Chef Challenge in Stavanger, Norway.Chen, who represented the Asia-Pacific region, dazzled the panel of judges with his magnificent chocolate display, titled the 3D Reflection of Deep Blue Ocean, which features a colored image of a breaching humpback whale.
