Director Yee Chih-yen’s movie Meeting Dr. Sun (行動代號:孫中山) won the Best Picture and the Audience Awards at the 10th Osaka Asian Film Festival on Sunday.

Hong Kong director Pang Ho-cheung (彭浩翔), who served as the jury president of the festival, said that the jury had chosen Meeting Dr. Sun, which was released last year, as best picture because of the film’s terse yet expressive script that vividly portrayed the unique aspects of Taiwanese society and politics and the daily lives of its people.

Pang also commended what he said was a stellar performance by the cast of young actors. Yee said he was surprised that his movie, which won the Best Original Screenplay Award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival last year, had earned the love of judges in Osaka.

“The honor means I and my team will have to keep working hard and keep cheering for Taiwan’s movie industry,” he said, reiterating his remarks when he collected the Golden Horse prize last year. Matthew Wei (魏漢鼎), who plays one of the leads in the film, said he was delighted by the movie’s awards.
